The prolific Canarian musician Diego Hernandez is not your average songwriter as he intentionally escapes any repetition, cyclic structures and linear melodies. His music is not 'songs' in the ordinary sense of the word. It's more like boat trip across the sea when at times it's calm and soothing and at times it's not. It may sound quite disturbing for an unprepared listener but it's not that kind of uncontrolled drift through the waves. It's just an expression of the non-linear mind of its auteur, and you can be sure that this expression is unique.

Look, a lot of the critically acclaimed records of today sound like they were created the following way: all tracks were burned onto a CD, than CD was placed into a grinding machine, and finally the record was glued together from the billion silvery plastic pieces removed out of the grinding machine. If you look regularly into the Pitchfork Media’s ‘best new music’ section you know what I mean - Arca, FKA Twigs, Rosalia’s “El Mal Querer”, etc. While b1n0’s eponymous debut album apparently belongs to the same ‘cross-everything avant-pop’ subgenre of experimental music the aforementioned musicians belong to, it sounds more, dunno… human? Like, “Well, we would like the robots having got their tunes to make love to, but we still shouldn’t ignore eukaryotes”. Thus, on the Arcameter b1n0 are way closer to Moses Sumney than to Jlin.

A mix of all with everything where nothing is what it seems. The fractured, the shattered, the strangely attractive and absolutely mindblowing release of Madrid-based experimental rock combo. Freak folk, dubstep, glitch, abstract hip hop, dreampop, psychedelic rock, kraut rock, etc. - all amalgamated into one strange brew which causes the hypnotic effect to the listener. An adventurous listening indeed. During the first couple of tracks you have to adjust your mind and auditory nerve fibers to embrace the sound, and then sound embraces you, and you feel like it's the greatest kind of music you've ever heard.

Enigmatic (no Facebook, no twitter, no other redes sociales) Barcelonian quartet is set to release their third effort. Honestly speaking, I'm not even sure that these four tracks on the Foehn Records' bandcamp page are completing the album in its fullness - two more songs are promised to be presented along with the limited vinyl release of "Second Two: Chapter Home", or I just got it wrong.

This is psycho folk. This is pure 'stream of consciousness' experimental psycho folk alot like the early works of Noah Lennox aka Panda Bear crossed with the sounds of Seward's labelmate Cherry. This music has no borders and frames - strange, uncommon, fractured, overtly theatrical, flowing freely back and forth, leaving you with headache and prescribing the pain reliever in the same time.

The new album of Canarian-born singer/songwriter Diego Hernandez (the participant of folk band Keiko as well as the dub orchestra Pachumba) follows the steps of his first solo record "Small Songs For New Beginnings" (p)2012 also on Foehn. It's a free-form 'stream of consciousness' psycho folk - sometimes dreamy, sometimes noisy, sometimes trippy. Being seemingly unstructured for an unprepared ear, these songs are constructed of tiny sounds (hisses, clicks and cracks, etc) placed here and there using athmosphere as glue. But though the parts are glued by such the fragile (read: unreliable) substance, the music never stands on the verge of falling apart.
There's nothing about 'introversion as amusement'. It's not about amusement at all. It's about thinking, it's about looking inward, it's about pulling together the things that you'd never thought to be pulled together.

Another classic Foehn release. Being as intelligent as intimate and as delicate as warm, the new album of Combray may sound like the wordless twin brother of I Am Dive but it works fine without any comparisons. Built upon the ethereal sound effects over the twinkling guitar arpeggios these six tracks of thoughtful instrumental music will lead you wherever you want (not only mentally but geographically as well, as 'Combray' and 'Ullapool' both are the real European locations), and it's hard not to follow.

20 Key Labels of Contemporary Spanish Indie Scene. Part I

A month ago I incidentally came across an article named "13 Labels That Define Spain's Indie Music History". It briefly covered some truly emblematic labels but also the list included the labels that, on my opinion, had pretty limited impact on the scene. So I decided to make my own list of the key labels of Spanish indie rock. Here below is the 1st part of this list (in alphabetical order). 

Acuarela (Madrid) Sr. Chinarro, Migala, Refree

One of the seminal indie labels of 90s and 00s is led by 'the man of many talents' Jesus Llorente. Formerly being responsible for producing such the 'high profile' artists as Sr. Chinarro and Migala, now the label releases the string of less-known musicians like Manu Ferron or A Veces Ciclon while Jesus tries to diversify the activities by releasing the books and creating the comic strips.

Aloud Music (Barcelona) Fira Fem, The Last 3 Lines, Nothink

The relatively young Barcelona-based label with the roster that could make the Pitchfork reviewers tremble - the genre specialization of Aloud lies somewhere in the wide range between [adored by hipsters] electro, nugaze and so-called 'post-everything'. Pitchfork would definitely like many of the albums released by the label.

BCore Disc (Barcelona) The New Raemon, Betunizer, Eric Fuentes

Arguably the most important Spanish indie label of today. Launched 25 years ago as some kind of Spain's own Dischord and initially being concentrated on punk and hardcore/post-hardcore now BCore includes many stylistically different bands (let's just take four most recent albums by the label: Dulce Pajara de Juventud's "Triumph" is alternative rock with 'wall of sound' and soul music elements, Margarita's self-titled effort is pop-punk, The New Raemon's "Oh, Rompehielos" is singer/songwriter and Jupiter Lion's "Brighter" is electro).
Also the label maintains the enormous list of officially licensed albums from many of the key North American independent labels where you can easily be drown into for hours.

Discos Humeantes (Oviedo) Fabuloso Combo Espectro, SraSrSra, Farniente

The quirky punky uncompromised Asturian label's releases include, for instance, lo-fi/no-fi garage duo SraSrSra, tight punk band Futuro Terror, mentally unstable post-punks Fabuloso Combo Especto, perfect IDM project Farniente. Getting into your hands any given album released by Discos Humeantes you'll never know beforehands what you're up to deal with. And this is not a bug, it's a feature.

El Genio Equivocado (Barcelona) Las Ruinas, Grushenka, Algora

The burgeoning Barcelonian imprint tends to be one of the most interesting labels of the current moment. Celebrating its fifth anniversary in 2015 the label spearheaded by Joan Casulleras and Rafa Piera has the perfect and potentially groundbreaking (at least in terms of indie world) roster that includes such names as Algora, Burrito Panza, Grushenka, Cosmen Adelaida, Como Vivir En El Campo, Hans Laguna, Las Ruinas... Should I tell you more? Probably no.

El Hombre Bala (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) Resonance, El Viejo Astra, Brutalizzed Kids

You may know nothing about Canarian indie scene but it's not because of the scene's poor conditions. Mostly it's because of the geographic remoteness and logistical issues caused by it. It's energetically and financially devastating to move your gear to and from the mainland, so only few bands from Canary Islands are able to do so. But if there is anything to prove the quality (and quantity as well) of the local bands that have limited live access to remote listener it's El Hombre Bala - the label, the bar, the eventplace.

Elefant (Madrid) La Bien Querida, Cooper, La Casa Azul

To say "Spanish indie pop" is to mean "Elefant Records" and vice versa. Initially building its notoriety upon the 'donostia pop' phenomenon (Aventuras de Kirlian, Le Mans, etc) in the 1st half of 90s now Elefant remains one of the most notable and the most significant indie labels of Spain... not only Spain, in fact, but of all non-English speaking part of world being responsible for tons and tons of classics released all through these years.

Ernie Producciones (Vigo) Ninos Mutantes, Julio De La Rosa, Igloo

As I have already said it once, the balancing man stamp is the best confirmation of the quality. You can't deny the fact that Ernie Producciones/Records is one of the key indie labels as for Galicia as for Spain as a whole. Just look at these names: Ninos Mutantes, Julio de la Rosa, Igloo, Maryland, Nino Y Pistola, Napoleon Solo, Pasajero, Novedades Carminha, Holywater...It couldn't be any better.

Flor Y Nata (Catalunya) Colorado, Lo Nunca Dicho, Carlos Siles

Having such the stylistically diversified bands as Colorado, Karenin, TanStuPids or Copo in the roster, another Catalan imprint Flor Y Nata has no inclination to any particular genre. But while the genre-based philosophy definitely is not one of the label's strenghts, the variety of supply truly is.

Foehn (Barcelona) I Am Dive, Oso Leone, Poomse

Led by red-haired Barcelonian Marc Campillo, Foehn Records is the label with distinct and well-shaped philosophy. If you're looking for the pure entertainment, please, walk away. There's nothing to entertain you but there's a lot to make you think over, make you feel deep emotions, make you drop with the raindrops upon the leaves in the hazy forests, make you see the world by the multifacet eye of the dragonfly.

It's the post #101, so it's something like starting a new life. And I'd like to start this new life with something good for everyone who reads these words.

Two of the best and most innovative labels of Spain - Foehn Records (Barcelona) and El Hombre Bala (Santa Cruz de Tenerife) - have released recently their compilations of the best 2014's tracks of the bands from their rosters. The Best Of 2014. Albums 4 - 10

10. Acuario "Cassette Para Los Niños"

(p)Marxophone

The solo analogue electronica project of Nudozurdo's Leo Mateos. These great tunes (imagine something between Depeche Mode's "Some Great Reward" and Dorian's "La Ciudad Subterranea") accompanied by the familiar plaintive vocals of Leo should be the good intermediate POI for the one who's waiting for the next Nudozurdo release - but it's not good, in fact. It appears to be fucking good.

09. Guerrera "Mauna Loa"

A supergroup of sorts (Guerrera represents the members of the local Galician indie bands - such diverse as melodic indie/grunge-oriented Holywater or blackened crust/hardcore Ictus, for example), this band is the energy, the fury and the rampage all incapsulated and wrapped up in psychedelic/ sludge/ progressive thunderstorm.

08. I Am Dive "Wolves"

A total opposite to Guerrera, I Am Dive's new album is the quiet slowcore mixed with ambient IDM and dreampop, a perfect soundtrack to the lonely hours spent on the thin border between the reality and the dream.

07. Sr. Chinarro "Perspectiva Caballera"

In the 2010's Antonio Luque has come to the 'album per year' schedule. But despite the short interims between albums the last one contains some visible changes to the renowned musician's usual template. On his most recent work Antonio sounds like he was bitten by Bill Callahan. So, "Perspectiva Caballera" is the most cohesive album in Sr. Chinarro's history - and probably the saddest one.

06. Niños Mutantes "El Futuro"

Though "Las Noches de Insomnio" and "Naufragos" contained some truly great songs, but they did not work for me as albums. So "El Futuro" is their first album in years which contains some great songs and works very well as a whole.

05. Sidonie "Sierra Y Canada"

(p)Sony/Octubre

The best bittersweet pop album of the year. "These songs surely will make sing and dance along and get stuck in your head for [at least] months", I wrote 8 months ago. And now I must admit that it works just like I predicted.

04. Poomse "Vs.The Kingdom Of Death"

With two albums in Top10 and absolutely fantastic Karen Koltrane short album, Barcelona-based Foehn Records is the 'Champion of All Indie Labels' in 2014. The Poomse's album was the first released by Foehn this year - in the very beginning of February, so this album follows me all the year through. With the songs like "Empty Sea", "August, 2011" and especially "Daily Bread" it's the best companion for the old school indie rock fan like me. 

Las Resenas Casuales. Oso Leone "Mokragora"

Now I regret purchasing the vinyl turntable a bit too late. I did it this year's May, but it was March when we (my couple Tanya & me) were visiting Barcelona. During this visit I purchased the CD version of this album right from the hands of Marc Campillo, the head of Foehn Records. I'd better think twice before as  this album is clearly of that 'sit and listen' kind that perfectly fits for the vinyl.

The Mallorcan band plays the structurally complicated cinematic sadcore that incorporates other genres like avant-pop, folk, acid jazz or psychedelia. The album's name corresponds (I don't know why) with the Serbian village of Mokra Gora while the songs are named after various species of plants - from well-known ficuses or cactuses to more obscure clivias and monsteras.

It may sound pretty strange, but from the first listen I had a feeling of "Mokragora" as of being fully instrumental. The songs have their lyrics but the vocals are here not for words and meanings - they're here for sounds and feelings. Just imagine yourself stepping into the forest at the dawn carefully moving the cold branches apart to pave your way, and occasionally touching the spider's web with the drops of water condensed at the corners of the web, and they fall over you... Oso Leone create such the ethereal constructions with their music, and the words are falling from above like the raindrops, so these hypnotic landascapes are rather rainy ones.
"Mokragora" washes over you leaving you covered by the thick morning fog. Inventive and truly original, this album is definitely one of the best albums of 2010's.

Las Resenas Casuales. Poomse "Vs. The Kingdom Of Death"

All the Mallorcan bands that I'm known of... Well they're not so numerous though - I know only three Mallorcan bands: Sexy Sadie, L.A. and Poomse (I don't know exactly what the word 'poomse' means - maybe it's something out of taekwondo vocabulary). They all sing in English, and English of all of them is perfect. From the beginning of this review I should admit that the mere use of English is Poomse's weakest feature (well again - it's all about my own cockroaches in the attic, as I prefer Spanish or Catalan to English). Their best feature anyway is... everything the rest.

"Vs. The Kingdom Of Death" is the second full lenght work of Poomse. While the first one - "Tomorrow Will Come & It Will Be Fine" - was mostly 'one man stand' of Llorenc Rossello who played almost all instruments himself, the new album was recorded as a band.

Poomse play sadcore. Or slow indie rock mixed with americana. Or... Ok, I'm enough with these stylistical measurements now. Let's put it in the way of facts and/or comparisons.

The third number on the disc,seven minutes long "Ronette", plays a homage to titular "Twin Peaks" theme.

"Still Sharks" is the slowest song on the album. Oh no, the next song - "Song For Roberta Sparrow" where Llorenc Rossello sounds like Lou Barlow in the most quiet numbers of his Folk Implosion project - is the slower one. On "August, 2011" Llorenc starts to sound like Robert Pollard (despite the fact that Robert Pollard has never penned such a slow song neither in Guided By Voices nor within zillion of his solo projects). One of the numbers is titled "Tomorrow Will Come" making a bridge to the previous effort. And the closing "The Kingdom Of Death" begins as [seemingly un]controlled destroy but when the first minute is over it turns into the beautiful song which evokes again the reminiscences of Sebadoh/Folk Implosion... at least until the moment when the trumpets are on.

Overall, it's the beautiful album sometimes gloomy sometimes meditative but never boring or sleepy. And "Daily Bread" is the best song that I've listened to in the year of 2014 so far.

A Quick Guide To... Foehn Records

Recently we (me and my mujer Tanya) have spent a couple of days in Barcelona to celebrate Tanya's birthday. On the last day of our short trip we met Marc Campillo, the head of Barcelona-based indie label Foehn Records (before the viaje I contacted him via Facebook so our short encounter was not a surprise for both of us).

It took a small amount of time for us to find the place where Foehn is really based, and shortly after I pressed the button of the intercom and said "Hola! Soy Mikhail desde Rusia!" a man with the natural red-coloured hair appeared on the treshold. Also, he was in the I Am Dive (one of the definitive Foehn bands) t-shirt. He brought us four CDs that I'd ordered, and also 3 CDs additionally as un regalo for us. The Spanish people of music never cease to amaze me - they're all so amicable and welcoming, and Marc is not an exclusion at all.

Foehn Records is the home for the thinkful music. You won't find any pop-oriented moneymakers here.

From Marina Gallardo to Inigo Ugarteburu, from Ursula to Blacanova, from I Am Dive to Oso Leone, from Lucius Works Here to El Gos Binari - at least one common thing unites all these bands and artists as well as all other bands and artists on the label: you can't listen to them on a fly. To feel and to understand this music you should really dive into it. You should sit down and listen to. I said sit. Down.
