The Best Of 2020. Top50. 31 - 40

40. Junco Y Mimbre "Junco Y Mimbre" (p)Hidden Track

Call it jangle pop, call it college rock. What Junco Y Mimbre lack in ambition they compensate it in quality of songwriting.

39. El Lobo En Tu Puerta "Santana Bendita" (p)Spinda

One of the best metal releases of the year - I mean, one of the best worldwide. Quirky, heavy, inventive, sarcastic and ultra-melodic record whose creators should be proud of.

38. Arista Fiera "Cromatismo Domestico" (p)El Genio Equivocado

The dreampop band from Malaga. There are songs where you think: "Wow, it's the best release of the year!" There is a couple of songs that leave you less enthusiastic. But the weighted average is undoubtedly high.

37. Ana Bejar "Sahara Star" (p)Discos Belamarh

What you see is what you get. Hot, dry, scorched like a world's most famous desert - that's what this music is.

36. Llum "Los Anos Liquidos" (p)Discos De Paseo

It took 8 years for indie pop singer/songwriter Jesus Saez to release the successor to "Limelight" (his previous LP) though he released some singles and EPs in the meantime. What could I say - for sure it was worth waiting for Llum's return.

34. Kracauer "Diferencia Y Repeticion" (p)Subterfuge

This name is abolutely new for me. I mean, I know that "kracauer" or "krakauer" means "from Krakow" in German. I know who Jon Krakauer is. But as a band, the name is new. This band is from Murcia, they successfully blend guitars with synths to get a pack of potential hits.

32. Atlantic "Volem Els Ponts" (p)self-released

This is how to make Weezer's music better than Weezer themselves. The two-faced band (with Maria Lopez as frontwoman they perform as Moonflower) shows considerable progress against their debut record as Atlantic ("1976") which was good in its own right but sounded less concentrated.

31. Nucli "Ephemeral Water Courses" (p)Hidden Track/ La Plana Sola

With links to Nueva Vulcano, Bullitt, Cala Vento, Power Burkas and Bad Religion the Catalan band Nucli has created the ultimate punk rock album of the year.

Nueva Vulcano "Ensayo"

Nueva Vulcano "Ensayo" (p)2020 BCore Disc/ La Castanya

It's been five years since critically acclaimed "Noveleria" was brought to light. In the times of streaming such the long span of dormancy (though they’ve never been completely silent during this time) could be detrimental for any career in music but it’s obviously not the case of Nueva Vulcano. It's time to declare the following: despite the significant time gap between records little has changed for the leaders of Catalan post-hardcore scene. Picking up right where they left off back in the year 2015 they are stepping into the new decade with another piece of solid gold full of off-key vocals, angular bass lines and guitars that flow freewillingly around the rhythm section. You're not gonna confuse it with anyone else's. As far as I can see, in terms of critical acclaim "Ensayo" is destined to follow the path of its predecessors marking one more milestone in the career of the Barcelona underground kingpins.

The Best Of 2015. 7x7

Step by step we are getting closer to the end very top.

Nueva Vulcano "Noveleria" (p)BCore Disc/La Castanya Listen/Buy
Papaya "No Me Quiero Enamorar" (p)Jabalina Listen/Buy
Blacanova "Regiones Devastadas" (p)El Genio Equivocado Listen/Buy
L.A. "From The City To The Ocean Side" (p)Sony Buy
Pasajero "Parque De Atracciones" (p)Ernie Producciones Listen Buy
  • The energy, the cool melodies, the provocative videos and a lot of noise around. The sophomore release of Alborotador Gomasio was forged on the noisey side of Madrid punk rock.
  • Another post hardcore-fueled fruit in my top lists garden. If the previous album of Nueva Vulcano "Los Peces De Colores" sounded quite edgier and stripped-down, "Noveleria" is a smoother record. There's more space in it, and while "Los Peces..." was really cool record, the new one is just better by all measures.
  • Tight and gorgeous yet quite minimalistic country-soaked baroque pop from the latest bird of the Jabalina Musica nest. Papaya's Yanara Espinoza seeks for happiness in more or less traditional formats of a song but somehow she manages to sound absolutely unique.
  • Before recording the new album the Sevillan post shoegaze rock outfit Blacanova moved from Foehn Records to El Genio Equivocado but did not change the artistic vision. Subtle и slow-paced tracks with psychedelia, shoegaze, post rock and dark folk influences for the fans of the band's previous works.
  • Luis Alberto Segura slowly moves towards his painfully underappreciated "Heavenly Hell"'s sound back from the stripped-down-to-the-core "SLNT FLM" template.
  • "Parque De Atracciones" definitely is the step forward for Pasajero. The band has matured for these three years that divide the second album from the first one. The songs got stronger, the arrangements got wiser, the sound got more concerned in nuances. Another success for Manuel Cabezali as a producer.
  • Experimentation with (or refusal of, in better words) the standard rock song format, flirting with pure stream of consciousness noise, and skipping between genres. With these things involved it's a pure artistic achievent for (lo:mueso) that this album doesnt sound quirky or pretentious.
